SPAIN/PORTUGAL - day four

oh wow, a Sunday... so after church I went to Alexa's house to meet up with the others so we would do the movie. I was the first one there, soon after, Jeremiah came, then Amy and finally Nicole. Where's Joe? (hmmm.........) so we basically did the movie without him. It took us pretty much the whole day to do it; from 1 pm until 9pm because we weren't ready with a script. However, we were able to finish recording, afterwards all we need is the editing and the effects. We just did whatever we can with the video, I left satisfied we were finally done with the video yet not as satisfied with the movie itself. (I bet we're gonna look really stupid... =p) and this is all for Mr. Cummins, I mean, for the class and our grades...

SPAIN/PORTUGAL - day three

Ok, so i really thought we were going to present the project today, but Mr. Cummins was so nice (grr, we pushed ourselves! and this is what we get?!) to push the due date on Monday...
I bet Mr. Cummins only said it's due on Friday because he wanted us to get it done earlier (
didn't you Mr. Cummins! :p), which kind of worked because my group is almost done with it (that was a dirty dirty trick Mr. Cummins!).
We were suppose to do the movie yesterday, but when we learned that it's due on Monday, we just scheduled it on Sunday
(because most of my group are busy on the weekend).
However, I'm glad everyone is doing their part. :D

Joe and Alexa are working on the cover page, Nicole is doing the script for the movie and looking for more facts about Portugal with Amy, Jeremiah is doing the cited page, and I'm almost done typing up the group essay.

- grrr, Mr. Cummins!
haha, just kidding... =p

SPAIN/PORTUGAL - day two

In class today, we took whatever information we were able to collect and we put it together for the group essay. We also planned to meet up later after school to go to Jeremiah's house where we can look for more info about our project, however only 2 people ended up going - me and Nicole. Alexa, Joe and Tang couldn't make it, but they promised to send their work to me via email. In Jeremiah's house, (i have to be honest Mr. Cummins!) we did sidetracked just a little bit. =p so we finished a third of the project. We still need to do the movie and print the essay out, which we will continue tomorrow. Since we have two countries, we plan to make Spain the essay part of the project while Portugal will be the movie.

United Kingdom Pt. 2

Today Theresa and I made the visual online. Jerremy started drawing the map, and Cameron researched. Serena sat next to us while Theresa and I did the visual. She was also giving hugs during the period and helped erase the white board with a rubber eraser. Lastly, Serena Ctrl-Vd on Camerons's computer.

SPAIN/PORTUGAL - day one

Basically today, we started doing the project in the computer lab. We've each decided to split the questions so later, we all could just combine what we got an turn it into the group essay. In the lab, we already started with the research.
Nicole is finding out about the unique problems our immigrant encountered on their journey and upon arrival to the US, the diary entry during the travel and where the immigrants were processed.
Mi is finding out about the jobs our immigrants got when in the US and their wages.
Alexa is finding out where our immigrants settled once they got into America and about the present-day power status of people from our assigned country.
Jeremiah will find out what years the immigrants landed in the US and describing the typical daily life of our immigrant.
Joe will be finding out how many immigrants came to the US and the push and pull factors.

I will be describing the racism our immigrant were exposed to, if they could "pass" as an American-born and if their traditions scare Americans.

Colossus

I think that this poem does not reflect off the US today. With people we already have in our country, some are still treated unfairly, and with disrespect. Yes, we are letting many immigrants in, but still some are wanted to leave. There is such a struggle with making immigrants citizens now, and when they become citizens it is still hard to find a place to live, a job, etc.

"Does the USA...

still follow the spirit of the poem? why/why not? how/how not?"
I think it still does and it does not. The poem shows how accepting America is to anyone from anywhere around the world. I do still think America accepts everyone, but there are still laws that make some immigrants illegal and it is hard for people to become citizens or live here legally. Even though the laws restrict some people from living here, without them there would be overpopulation. This country still keeps the spirit of the poem, but it must also go against it in order to control the population. It also goes against the spirit of the poem because some people treat immigrants differently than people born in the United States with racism and stereotypes.

Colossus

Not like the obviously famous Greeks
that conquer many lands
Here by the shore are the gates
A powerful woman with a flaming torch
is the trapped light and her name
Mother of Immigrants. Her welcoming hand
glows world-wide; her gentle eyes comman the bridged-harbor connecting two cities
"keep your traditions and excitement!" she cried,
with statue lips. "Give me your unfortunate,
and immigrants seeking freedom,
the unwanted trash ofyour home.
Send the seasick homeless to me,
I'll show you the way to happiness."

vivian, dakota &jackie

Does the U.S.A

Follow the spirit of the poem Colossus by Emma Lazarus? I still believe it does in a certain way. In many ways it doesn't. People are welcome to make a new life here. We all have the same opportunities, some just have to work harder for the bigger things. But I do think the Colossus is not followed when it pretty much says that all are welcome. Because not all kinds of people are welcome and when they do arrive they can be stereotyped and mistreated. Things are not like they used to be when immigrants used to pass by Ellis Island in one day. There is so much more to process. Now it could take 20 years even just to be a citizen here. And not everyone from every country is immediately accepted like how the poem sounds. For example if someone was to come from Iraq then that person would not be very welcomed

Serena&Theresa

Colossus
It's not something obvious or famous
But towers powerfully from land to land
Here surrounded by sea, our doors are opened
A mighty woman with a torch, whose fire
Is the permanent light, and she is
A mother for people unwanted, with her open arms
Welcoming people world wide. Her calm eyes lure them
Two seperate islands connected by unity
"Keep your culture and your traditions" the woman says
With her still lips "Give me your abused and poor"
Your deamened people wanting to be free
The all of those who are dirty and unwanted
Homeless and undesired are welcome
My light shines beside the door of opportunity

Does The USA Still Follow The Spirits of The Colossus Poem?

The U.S. doesn't follow the Colossus poem, and now the U.S. is doing more to keep immigrants out of the country. Some feel that immigrants take away job opportunities from Americans or that they increase crime, but thats not necessarily true. Only until people can realize that all they want is a chance at a better life and can destroy these stereotypes, then this poem can't fit the U.S.

Does the USA still follow the spirits of this poem ?

I hardly doubt that the US still follows the spirits of this poem , due to the enforced laws we have now , and the hope that basically died . This poem was probably , at one point , the main reason for people who were once nothing to become actually something . It even allowed almost anybody just to be here , but now ; it`s a whole another story .

Colossus remix

Unlike the famous Chinese Yao Ming
With Hulk Holgan winning from match to match
Here at our city dump, milpitas gates shal shine
A bad ass female with a cigerate, who's blunt
is filled with bad leaves, whos mother,
gets deported From her huge man hands
is a cigar; her red eyes look bad,
From Seaside to EPA to Sunnyvale is connected through air benders
keep these cities clean and sparkly until you cry
now hush those sexy lips! you poor child
every kid just wants to be free with no chores
to accept all people as long as they learn english
they better bring their butts over to me
I lift my champaign glass and say "Welcome to America!"

I could say that America follows the real poem, but at the same time does not follow the real poem. Me personally I dont really have a problem. Its cool how people come to America to start a new life. At the same time there are a lot of people who dont agree that immigrants can come to America and take their jobs because they are willing to work for a cheaper price. As long as it doesnt affect my life I would be cool with it.

Fernandez- Does the USA still follow the spirit of the Colossus poem?

The spirit of the poem is that of how the USA is more accepting of a varying number of peoples than in some other places around the world. Especially with the different troubles that have forced a nation's population to try to catch the American Dream and escape their troubles, such as a failing economy or an internal war. Today, the US has a more restrictions on immigrants because of the rising issue of over population, yet the spirit of the poem still remains. There are number of people who continue to travel borders in order gain a better life in America, and there are USA citizens that help them. This proves that the poem's spirit still lives in the modern world because even if the government disapproves, the US is mainly run by it's people, as it has been doing in the past.

Fernandez & Tang- A Modern Version of Colossus by Emma Lazarus

It's not as lustrous as the Greek's brass
Connecting lands like holding hands;
Here by the sea, our entrance stands
A herculean woman with her strong passion
Viewed within a torch, and her name
Mother of Rejects. From her guiding hand
She warmly welcomes anyone; her gentle eyes control
The bridge that lies between the borders of two similar cities,
"Your homelands can have their splendor!" she cries
With unmoving lips. "I'll have you weak,
Your people that want their freedom,
The untouchables at your shore,
Bring those without homes through the sea to me,
I have my light to show you our magnificent door!"

Does the USA still follow the spirits of this poem?

Not really. Ever since the 9/11 attacks the US has been pretty vigilant and they became more strict with their rules. They can't just let anyone in the US anymore therefore the security became more tight. They also became pretty paranoid; assuming a person who looks a certain way, i bet they won't let them in. Another reason is because majority of immigrants have been taking over job opportunities leaving some americans with none. It is true that some immigrants take advantage of the 'welcome sign' on the door, however most of them are just looking for a better life here in the US.

-Abby Garcia

Colossus by Abby and Marc

not known like the Greek God
controlling people as she travels far and wide
at the seashore the sun shall set
a big lady holding a flame which
hold power of protection, and we call
her Big Mama. She welcomes
with her hand. Her eyes order
bridges that neighboring cities border.
"Where you come from, just stay joyful" her mind
cries. "Gimme your burn-outs, your dirt-poor
From your group, wanting to break free,
the ugly crap from the seaside
Send the willing outcasts across the stormy sea
I shall welcome you with the light beside the entrance."

Does the USA follow this poem.

The USA does not follow this poem. In this poem they say the USA welcomes everyone and wants them to be free but for hundreds of years we have had problems with people that are not white. In the 1800's it was slavery, in the 1950's it was racism, and now its the mexicans. Every generation always has a "problem" going on that contradicts this poem.

Does the USA still follow the spirits of the poem?

I think that the USA does not follow the spirit of the poem because most people can be very ignorant when it comes to immigration. Sometimes, immigrants are treated much differently than those who were born in USA. They are even sometimes kicked out of the country... One of the main reasons why people immigrate to the USA is for a better life and to get an education. Immigrants are willing to do any job that people born here wouldn't do. The USA should be thankful for people like that, but they're not.

Does the USA still follow the spirit of this poem?

The USA no longer follows the spirit of this poem. We have actually been doing the exact opposite of it. We have been kicking illegal immigrants out of the United States so that we may control the population size and job opportunities.

Colossus by Barbosa and Lin

The Statue of Liberty is not like the Brazin Giant of Greek Fame,
She travels with giant strides from land to land
Here in America stands a badass chick with a torch
whose flame contains an energy that has the potential to alter the lives of so many,
whose name is Mother of Exiles.
From her torch it glows a world-wide welcome;
Her Eyes command the unity of the world.
"With your ancient lands, your splendid stories,
and your people wanting to become free,
I welcome you to America!"

Colossus by Emma Lazarus

Unlike the bold giant of Greek fame,
with strong limbs that touch coast to coast;
stands out worn down sunset gates
a statue that holds a torch, the flame
is a bright light, and her name
is Mother of Exiles. Her hands
welcomes all races; she controls
the bridge and the twin towers.
"I don't care who you are" she said
softly. "I will accept everyone,
including people who wants to be free,
even the dirty garbage from your land.
Give me your hobos, your storms.
I hold my lamp and welcome you"

Does the USA still follow the spirit of this poem?
No, the USA does not follow the spirit of the poem anymore. If you want to come to America, you have to wait on a list that takes over 10 years. Bush even requested a huge wall to be built to seperate USA and Mexico.

Necesito Chu Poem

Not like the standing out giant of Greek fame,
with powerful limbs moving from land to land;
Here at our ocean touched, sunset gates that stand
A big powerful woman with a torch, whose flame
is as big as lighting, and her name
Mother of Convicts. From her hand that glows
shines a welcome greeting to everyone; her
eyes demand the air-bridged harbor that identical cities hold together.
"Keep the history of your land alive!" Cries she
with closed quiet lips. "Give me your exhausted,
your poor, your closed spirits desiring to breathe free,
send the hobos for a better life, to a land of your dreams.

Dose the Us still follow the spirts of the poem

I feel that we do not follow the spirts of the poem. The U.S dose not allow the immigrants anymore. Even if the immigrants do happen to get here , they are sent back immediately after they have been arrested. If they do apply for a green card it takes several years to get approved for it. When they do become legal in the U.S the jobs they recieve are barley enough for them to support there familys. The immigrants arent treated the way every one else is, and that is why i feel the that the poems spirts arent followed any more.

Tan & Ngo Colossus [by Emma Lazarus]

Not like the brass statue of Greece,
With powerful legs that stretch from place to place.
At our oceans, the gates stand tall,
A woman, proud and strong, holds a flame
of dazzling merit. Her name?
The Mother of the Exiles. From her hand
a warm welcome glows. Her gentle eyes overlook the ocean that connects the world.
"Keep your nationality, your traditions" she cried
with still lips. "Give me your tired, your poor
The loads of people who want to be free,
The trash on your shore
Send these, the homeless, and others unwanted.
I will open the door of opportunity to them.

Does the USA still follow the spirit of this poem?

I believe we still follow this spirit somewhat. We have immigrants coming from all different places. Plus, the US is made up of immigrants anyway. It just has to be legalized and everything. The system is messed up anyway. Some people want to come to America and have better jobs than what their country can give them, but sometimes that chance is blown away because of the system. You have to live here for a couple of years and have a sustainable job. But what if you want to bring a loved one with you? You have to be separated from them for a really long time just so you could become a citizen. We aren't as free and welcome as back then, or as the poem says. We are not that generous anymore. So that kind of sucks for incoming immigrant. So the answer is, that we are welcome and friendly, only on slight terms. If they do not follow the rules then you get sent back to where you came from.

Does the USA still follow the spirit of this poem?

Colasses by Emma Lazarus

Not like the harsh and bold Greek Fame,
with strong legs at each side that stretch from land to land;
(skipped; forgot the sentence)
An extraordinary woman with a torch, whose flame
is so bright as a flash of lightning, and her name
Mother of Immigrants. Her inspiring hands
shows world-wide welcome her gracious eyes command
that air-bridged harbor that small cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, as your storied pride!" cries she
with silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
your assembled masses craving to breathe free,
the pitiable decline of your abounding shore.
Send these, the homeless, the wrong doers to me,
I lift my light beside the golden door, the passage to your dreams.

idk what its called

I dont think the usa still follows the spirit of the poem. Because we do not welcome immigrants as we did back in the day. we are trying to kick illigal immigrants out of the usa. Also most americans are not as friendly as they used to be, but alot of them still are.

HIIIIIIIIIIII Mr. Cummins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What I belive

I think that the USA still follows the poem because were still letting immigrants come into this country. The USA is still a strong country today just as we were many years ago as well. The only place I can think the USA has become soft in the last couple of years is in electing are president.WE also still rule a lot of the country's out there to.And the USA still has the Statue Of Liberty standing.

Garcia and Sanchez Poem

Not like the shameless giant of Greek fame,
With powerful arms and legs across land to land;
Here in water, the sun stands
A super women with a flaming torch is
The caught light and her home
Mother of travelers ,from the palm of her hand
Lights welcome,her glooming eye's
The air bridge harbor that identical cities show
The ancestor's place your storied of elegance cries she
With a closed mouth,she says
Come her, here in my land where you can be free
Get away from your old home land
If you can get passed some hardships
Your future will be bright

Poem: Maricruz G. Jeremy S.

Not like the shameless giant of the Greeks
With winning things from place to place
Here in water, the sun stands
A super woman, with a flamming torch
Is the light and her name
Mother of immigrants, from the palms of her hands
Lights welcome, her glooming eyes
The bridge harbors that twins cities frame
"keep your people in their land!" she says
"give me your poor, and tired"
And all waiting to be free,
The trash from your land can be,
Send these for a better life
I lift the great FIRE, for anyone!

What i think is ...

I do think that the USA still follows the the poems spirt because alot of immigrants come to this country to have a better life. Even though they are sometimes treated bad they still have courage to keep going and follow their dream.

I think....

I think the US still holds the spirit of the poem, but the energy and excitement has died down a bit. Illegal immigrants are shipped back to their countries. What harm can they do? They already got here, so let them be. I also think that immigrants should be able to become citizens or run for president. If they stayed long enough then they should be ale too.

Brown&Nguyen's Poem

Not like the obviously big, popluar Greeks
With awesome legs moving from place to place
Here at our sunset oceans, the borders will stay
A strong lady with a stick with flames, whose fire
Is the captivating light,& her name
Mom of loners. From her shiny hand.
Shines around the world with welcome; her kind eyes order
The bridge at the harbor that the similar cities enclose
"Keep, old lands, your stories are exciting!" she yells
With a quiet moth. "Give me your exhausted, your broke,
Your tightly bounded masses want to stretch.
The dirty refuse your crowded land.
Send the hobos on the rocky ships to me,
I lift my torch next to the border.

I Believe...

I believe that the USA at times does follow the spirit of this poem by allowing legal immigrants to come to this land and try to make a better life for themselves. On the other hand I also believe that the illegal immigrants that also come to make a better living are deported back to their country. So in all I believe that the USA is somewhere in the middle.

If i were 18, I would vote for Barack Obama. I would vote for him because his plan is to put 1 million hybrid cars that take up to 150mpg on the road by 2015. It would be a huge improvement in our society. He also plans to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. I think Barack Obama would make a cool president.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

If I were 18...

If I can vote, I would vote for 'Obama' because He's a Democratic representative and he seems a generous guy. I choose democratic leader, to have a freedom and rights. According to what I know about election, Obama has the highest vote in California. He's the youngest representative of all, means he can stay longer on the term and he still has a lot to learn about politics. And if He choose to be a president in the United States in America, He would be a first African-American to be a President and that would make a big difference in the country.

odelle rubia

i would vote for obama because if he were to be voted for president. He would be the first african american president of the united states. it would be something new for the united states. i believe he could do good for the united states. if mccain were elected it would be the same ordinary white guy for president. thats why i believe obama would be best to be president

Jeremy Sanchez

If I was 18 and able to vote I would vote for Obama.I would vote for obama because he is a democrate and McCain is republican and would follow the steps of bush.If Obama becomes pres. he would give back a bigger tax refund.Obama if voted in would become the first black president which would make history. And he says he will pull the troops from iraq.

Abby Garcia

If I were 18, I would vote for Obama. His campaigns are really organized and prepared and he has more experience with 20 years of public service to the community. Obama drew attention from the public to change, to work against poverty and to stop the war in Iraq (he's our only hope!). Obama had a rough start; he started at the very bottom and rose to the top above everyone else. Come on! I mean, even Hillary supports him... :D

If...

If I was 18 i would vote for obama because i guess everybody is saying that he is good.
He is making a lot of promises but i'm not sure if he is going to make all of them real.
Right now i have no idea what is going to happen and who is going to win.
I hope obama wins!!!

Marc Marquez

If I were 18 and could vote, I would vote for Barrack Obama because he is a democrat and that he promised a lot of new reforms. Also I would vote for him because he also has interesting and positive views such as reforms in taxes, health care, and the war in Iraq.

Travis

If I were 18, I would vote for John McCain. I would vote for him because he will help lower taxes and built a cleaner and better environment. Also I think Obama lacks government skills, compared to McCain he probably has more experience. Also McCain is older and wiser.
In the other hand Obama is still good.

Victor Lin

If I were 18 id vote for Barrack Obama. I would vote for Barrack Obama because he sounds better than McCain. Id also vote for him because he says he will lower taxes. If he lowered taxes everything would be cheaper. Cheaper stuff=less money. Barrack would also be the first black president.
I would vote for John McCain because my family are hard core republicans. I dont really understand politics yet, but I would probably have to vote for McCain. My Grandpa is a really really hard core republican. Thats why I would vote for McCain.
I would vote for John McCain because my family are hard core republicans. I dont really understand politics yet, but I would probably have to vote for McCain. My Grandpa is a really really hard core republican. Thats why I would vote for McCain.

!

If i were 18 and could vote, i would choose no one :) because i dont know anything about any of them, i dont care about politics. i think they are both probably going to die anyways because Obama is black so if he is chosen some people will get mad at most likely shoot him, and Mccain is just old so he will probably just die of old age.

Jerremy Ferrer

If I were 18, i would vote for Barack Obama. But to be honest with you, I dont really care who becomes president. Anyways, I would vote for Obama because he is a democrat. He is an African-American and I think it would be cool if he was the first Black president. I like the way he speaks when he does speeches. I really hope he wins the election! Okay, bye!

OOOOHH! I almost forgot, anyone would be a better president than Bush. :)

If...

If i was 18 i would vote for chuck norris beacuse he is chuck norris.

Alexandrea Necesito

If I were 18, I would vote for Obama. I believe he would be a great leader for the United States. I feel he has the spirit and drive to run a country with the help of his other officers. I would also vote for him because I would like to see him as the first African-American president of the United States.

Stephen Amador

If I was 18 I would vote for myself. So I could make a 3 Dollar Bill with my face on it. I would make myself the richest man on earth. Then I would be the first Mexican President. After I won the election I would throw a huge fiesta!

Trang Ngo

If I was 18 and I could vote, I would vote for Obama. He seems to be very passionate about politics. He also seems like a person to care about education and the standards of school. One of his goals is to liberate the citizens of the United States of high taxes. Obama seems like the type of person who would take interest in what citizens actually want. I thinks he's ideals will help better our future.

Theresa Larrazabal

If I were 18 and had the right to vote I would vote for Barack Obama. For one thing it would piss my mom of for voting for a democrate. Secondly he would probably be the best choice on getting the troops out of Iraq. But all in all i have no interest in politics. I realize that if I vote or not it will determine my future condition but sine I cannot vote as of right now I really couldn't care less. The minds of people around me are closed and focused on the party that they believe are right. So there is really no one that explain the goals of each party to me.

kevin brown

If I were 18 i would vote for Obama. I would vote for him because he is a great leader. He is also one of the best public speakers i have ever seen. Also because he is a democrat and he is against the war. That is why I would vote for Obama for the next president.

Barrack Obama

If I was eighteen years of age, and had the opportunity to vote, then I would vote for Barrack Obama. I believe that he is the key candidate because, while his resume may be thin, his idea is radical. He is for choice and change, which are two things that I feel strong about. It would be a real turning point in American History to have a president that isn't Caucasian. Another reason why I would vote for Obama is because of the fact that I personally feel like a democrat.

Obama !!

If I was eighteen and could vote, I would vote for Barrack Obama! One of the reasons I would vote for him would be, because I saw this amazing youtube video about him. It included music, and many famous artists which I liked. :] Other than that, Obama is really trying to give us a better welfare which could help hospital prices, global conflicts, etc. He has come a long way and is a true African American, and deserves to be President.

Nicole Fernandez

If I was eighten and I could vote for one the of the presidents. I cannot fully decide on who I would vote for. I understand that Barack Obama knows what needs to be done for a better future. Although some of his promises cannot be immediately put into attention, such as better well fare. I have learned from another's view that he can put his promises into action, only at a slow pace with one step at a time. The fact that Obama is highly educated and has come from a middle class family, raised under the same common circumstances such as most Americans, is reason enough to vote for him as our future President.

If I was 18 and old enough to vote, I would vote for...

I would vote for Obama, because I'm a democrat. Foshizz. He has plans to stop the war and help the economy. I'm not really into politics but I would vote for a president that would help benefit the future economy. He will have more jobs for our parents and our future adult selves. I don't like McCain(don't even know how to spell his name) because, he will not stop the war in Iraq and he is a republican. Republican are rich people, and I am definately not rich.

If I were 18 and i could vote I would vote for Obama. I would vote for him because he is younger then Mc Cain. I also like the changes he is going to do for our country. He seems like a smart, generous person and would know what he is doing. I also like the fact that he would be the first african american president. I really hope he becomes our new president.

If I Were 18, I'd Vote For...

Hi! If I was eighteen right now, I would vote for Obama, but hopefully he won't get assassined!!! I don't like McCain because he is old and supports Bush! And Bush is a HORRIBLE president. Save a life, say no to Bush. I would like to add some more color to the white house because white is BORING!

LOVE CHRISTINE :]

If I was eighteen right now, I would vote for Obama. I would vote for Obama because McCain is old. If McCain were to die, his vice president would take the presidency. I would not want Palin as the president, because she does not have enough experience as the other candidates. I also would not vote for McCain because he does not have a song on youtube like OBAMA!
