Fernandez- Does the USA still follow the spirit of the Colossus poem?

The spirit of the poem is that of how the USA is more accepting of a varying number of peoples than in some other places around the world. Especially with the different troubles that have forced a nation's population to try to catch the American Dream and escape their troubles, such as a failing economy or an internal war. Today, the US has a more restrictions on immigrants because of the rising issue of over population, yet the spirit of the poem still remains. There are number of people who continue to travel borders in order gain a better life in America, and there are USA citizens that help them. This proves that the poem's spirit still lives in the modern world because even if the government disapproves, the US is mainly run by it's people, as it has been doing in the past.
